Hancock, MI - Finlandia women's softball remains on campus this week and will continue its practice regimen in the hopes of achieving access for Finlandia Athletics first NCAA post season appearance for any sport. Monday, May 7, the NCAA will hold its post season championship selection for the sport of softball in Division III. As an independent institution (no conference affiliation), Finlandia Softball does not have access to an automatic qualification into post-season as programs who are affiliated in a conference do, and must rely on overall wins-loss performance for consideration into a 'Pool B' or at-large berth. “Unfortunately for our Softball program (and all programs other than hockey), not having a conference affiliation absolutely hurts us,” comments
Chris Salani, Director of Athletics. “We are also conflicted by our scheduling restrictions and abilities to get what the NCAA uses as primary selection criteria, and that is 'in-region' competition. The NCAA has placed our Softball program in the 'Central' region in which our closest competitor is Alma College. Because of our geographic location to schools in Lower Michigan, Ohio and Indiana (of which comprise the Central region), we do not have enough contests against in-region opponents to meet the selection criteria; therefore we will always be placed behind programs who may have a worse winning percentage due to 'in-region' power rankings.”

th. The activities were headed by two year SAAC President Mariah Mumford, Vice President Kelly Poelstra, Brittany Garland and Assistant Athletic Director / Senior Woman Administrator,
Heather Reinke. The activities for the week started on Tuesday with guest speaker Marc Williams. Finlandia was fortunate enough to have Mr. Williams speak through the efforts of
Heather Reinke and personal connections with
Chris Salani. He spoke twice to the students and faculty of Finlandia. Attendee Allison Lee found Mr. Williams' second speech, tailored particularly to athletes, “kept our attention and reached out to students on an individual level.” Also in attendance, non-student athlete Abby Sewell said “he was very inspirational to me. I was moved by his speech and he definitely wanted to put everyone on the right path in life. He definitely helped me put my head on straight and figure out things I want to do to improve my future.”
